Over the summer we signed my son up for CAHA’s 4×4 camp. The main reason we decided to sign him up was so he could stay active on the ice between hockey seasons. We didn’t want him to get “rusty”. Also, to take the time to fine tune his skills, game play and gain more confidence (if that is possible).
I liked that they combine two divisions, both bantam and midget. They also combine travel players with house league players. The bantams had to rise to the older kids skill level, as well as house players had to rise to travel players skill level. It was a 2 minutes of constant play then time for the next line.
What I really did NOT like was one of the coaches had his younger kids (I think they are like 6-8 years old) play on the ice with the older boys. That was so careless and dangerous; not only for the young boys but for the older ones (both bantam and midget). I did not see any coaching from the coaching staff either. Not only were they not getting the coaching they needed but they didn’t get the ice time they deserved. I was basically divide the kids up into teams and let them play for 50 minutes.
It is hard for me to say if I would sign my kid up again next summer. He did get the ice time we were wanting, and he did have fun. But for the price and no coaching to help the kids adjust what needs to be adjusted its hard for me to say yes. Over all I was disappointed in this camp.
